Has energy monitoring been sitting on your to-do list for far too long??
Understandable! Many hesitate to tackle this big topic. But: Legal requirements such as the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG), the EU Building Directive and the Digital Product Passport are continuously raising the bar for energy efficiency and digital transparency. However, a complete overhaul or replacement of existing systems is often economically unfeasible or technically impractical, especially for SMEs. That’s why now is the time to retrofit, launch or expand energy monitoring! The brand-new measurement modules from the product line phi by Kraus & Naimer make it incredibly simple: either as a snap-on version for the KA40 and KA63 switch disconnectors from Kraus & Naimer, or as a standalone variant that can be used independently. Hot brewed, freshly tapped, enjoyed cool
A number of them help at Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu to ensure that the huge cauldrons do what they are supposed to do. Beer has been brewed in the heart of the Black Forest for 900 years. I was able to experience exactly how this works during a historical brewery tour last autumn. The tour is really interesting and entertaining, and even if the wealth of information is anything but dry, the beer tasting is really good at the end (https://alpirsbacher.de/unsere-brauwelt/). The family business from the Black Forest still sticks to traditional recipes, regional ingredients and a passion for craftsmanship. And you can taste it too! Leisure tip: If you want to combine the brewery tour with a little adventure, I recommend the Hirschgrund-Zipline, a fun event between the treetops at dizzy heights (https://www.hirschgrund-zipline.de/) with 7 lanes. Don't forget hiking shoes. Text and photos: Sonja Reinle

Hydrogen – fuel of the future?
A pressure transmitter based on piezoresistive technology has a stainless-steel diaphragm behind which oil is found. As already mentioned, permeability is one of the problems to contend with when it comes to dealing with hydrogen; the gas can easily diffuse through the steel.

Individual electronics enclosures
“Enclosures are a product’s visiting card. They demonstrate a company’s brand values and make them visible. Also, they present an opportunity for products to stand out from the competition. Consequently, the demands made of the individual design of electronics enclosures are increasing all the time,” says Sebastian Hein. The tasks of this graduate product designer and trained production model maker include both the development of design concepts for individual enclosure solutions and also the designing of BOPLA’s attractive future products. This ensures that Sebastian Hein, who also brings with him his experience as a CAD designer in the automotive sector, is a valued member of the BOPLA team which uses interdisciplinary cooperation to develop intelligent products. As early as during the first phase of product development, his rapid and individual draft designs form the basis for discussions with customers.

Individuality as part of the standard portfolio: BOPLA reorganises the 19” range
Only the dimensions are standardised: At the same time as the launch of the product catalogue, Bopla Gehäuse Systeme GmbH are restructuring their range of 19” products. Now the customer-specific assembly systems are divided into subrack and desktop enclosures, small control enclosures for the fitting of 19” subracks and front panels. In addition, BOPLA manufactures non-standard enclosures for PCBs. The ideal solution when developers require a package of services from planning to sampling to series manufacture to packaging – and all available from a single source. This ensures that BOPLA is meeting increased demands and expectations from the market. A specially-printed front panel. A desktop enclosure which can also be integrated in a cabinet. A 19” enclosure for a special size of PCB which doesn’t conform to the Euro card format. And, not least, customer-specific packaging. The demands made of 19” subracks and other assembly systems are increasing. It’s not just the sturdy outer case which is important – increasingly, customer-specific equipment details are an integral part of development. Olaf Kleineberg, BOPLA’s product manager for 19” subracks, understands that a competent partner for subracks is more important than ever: “Using the standardised 19” system as a basis, we manufacture the individual systems that our customers ask for. In addition to the wide range of products, our huge depth of production allows us to produce a unique total package from a single source.” Always in accordance with DIN EN 60297-3-101 Developers can choose between BOPLA’s metal and plastic applications for the 19”-compliant enclosures used for their electronics systems. All the components are standardised in accordance with DIN EN 60297-3-101. The different designs and sizes and a wide range of accessories provide a high degree of flexibility for different applications. In doing this, the range of products makes both standard and EMC versions available.

Industrial WEB panel with performance!
Lots of images, 3D views, films or functions such as drag & drop – these demands on HMIs in the industrial sector often simply lack power. This is not the case with the two new KN-C.WEB series from Kraus & Naimer. The devices of the Wizard and Plug&Play series are equipped with powerful Chromium-based HTML5 browsers, which can easily access your server-side visualization and easily display data from multiple devices. Thus, they act as an HTML5 web application interface to display and interact with data in real time. However, the software-side options and the IMX8 processor inside are only important if the devices can withstand the external influences. The robust KN-C.700-WEB.Wizard is armed against harsh environments with its extended temperature range from -20° to +60°C and the 3.2 mm thick real glass front. It also shines with a brilliant display and offers the user the comfort of capacitive multi-touch operation. The KN-C.700.WEB.Plug&Play offers maximum flexibility when selecting the location. Whether mounting on the stand, on the wall or on the support arm – power is supplied and data is transferred via Power-over-Ethernet via the M22 screw connection on the back in just one cable. Combined with the multi-touch PCAP touch screen made of real glass, the robust plug & play ensures full IP67 environmental protection without an additional housing. Any access control requirements in industrial environments are covered via NFC, and Wi-Fi also acts as a second Ethernet port. Intelligent and individual axis coordination with the POS-324 The new POS-324-U-PFN expands upon the proven POS-124-U-PFN with intelligent axis coordination, individual script extensions, expanded PROFINET communication capabilities, and an integrated simulation mode. In addition to the established synchronous control, which enables precise and synchronous movement of both axes on the same plane, the following new functions are available: FlexiMod allows for the implementation of additional script-based functions. Furthermore, intelligent axis movement is now possible, enabling the simultaneous achievement of the desired target position for both axes, regardless of the path profile. Additionally, the application can be qualitatively tested in a simulation mode on the device. Finally, PROFINET communication is now expandable to 64 bytes. Typical applications: Positioning control or synchronization control with hydraulic axes.

Key switch secure substation
The huge power lines that protrude from the wall in the Großgartach substation and merge into the overhead line are impressive. The dimensions of the routes are comparable to the motorway network. Here, the maximum voltage of 380,000 volts from various power plants, wind and solar systems from the European grid is distributed and transformed to 110,000 volts for further distribution to regional distribution grids, analogous to federal/country roads. Großgartach is just one of 50 substations operated by the transmission system operator TransnetBW, which secures the power supply for around eleven million people in south-west Germany. Systems updated Substations must be well secured. For this reason, a new system to protect against maintenance and repair work was installed in 2021/22 during the conversion in Großgartach. Key switches from Kraus & Naimer GmbH in Karlsruhe are used, which not only ensure safety but also greatly simplify work processes. "Until now, the electrical drive had to be blocked after activation by the main control line, e.g. at a switch. In a so-called gas-insulated switchgear, this is sometimes only possible by working at a height of up to eight meters in areas that are difficult to access," says Martin Steinhart from TransnetBW. With the installation of the Kraus & Naimer key switch centrally on site in the control cabinet, the drives of the switches can be deactivated in order to secure them against being switched on again. The CA20 key switches with a customer-specific special program fulfill a double function: By using a locking system, individual fields (drives) are "locked off" from one another, ... LED function handles simplify the manufacture of turned and milled parts for electric vehicles
Geiger Fertigungstechnologie GmbH, which produces sophisticated turned and milled parts for drive technology and sensors, relies on highly automated robots in its workshops. However, the demands on interfaces that enable efficient cooperation between people and systems are increasing. When designing a new robot cell on a machine tool of a milling center in spring 2022, the company from Pretzfeld therefore relied on functional handles from Kraus & Naimer GmbH, specialists for switches, functional handles and enclosures as well as touch panels. The three-color illuminated handle bars use the traffic light system to indicate the loading status of the drawers for the workpiece feed and removal. The integrated pushbutton enables direct, secure access to the components without the machine operator having to switch to an additional control panel. It's hard to miss when one of the functional handles on the 5 m long, automated robotic cell changes colour. The traffic light system clearly shows the loading status of the nine drawers for workpiece loading and unloading. The time has come: one compartment is finished. With just one movement, an employee unlocks and opens the drawer, removes the blister with the finished parts and inserts a new one with raw parts. The compartment is closed and immediately released again via the integrated push button on the handle. When developing the new system at Geiger Fertigungstechnologie GmbH in Pretzfeld, it was clear that this workflow had to be designed to be as simple, efficient and safe as possible. No external warning light that requires the machine operator's attention, no additional button that needs to be pressed and no time-consuming trip to a separate control panel should be necessary. Thanks to this smooth cooperation between humans and robots, the associated milling machine is reliably loaded in order to produce sophisticated components for air condi... As a current development, item is presenting a system workstation from the item Lean Production modular system with height-adjustable work levels and connected mobile robotics. The goal: internal logistics of the highest efficiency. The implementation: As if by magic, a transport trolley - moved by an AGV - rolls to the intended workplace. With the help of a shuttle system, material boxes are retrieved from an automatic small parts warehouse, recorded and conveyed to the picking station via a conveyor belt. The trolley docks directly at this picking station. Central role HMI The work table is raised or lowered to the optimal position via the KN-C Plug & Play touch panel. To do this, Kraus & Naimer programmed the connection to the item BL 1-04/C controller – the servo controller for item servo motors. It determines the speed and position of the adjustable working plane. (...) Please see the link below for the full article.

Manual Transfer Switch – what actually happens in the event of a grid failure?
In industry, medical care or in the private sector - today practically nothing works without electricity. ON THE ONE HAND: According to the German federal government, “large-scale, long-lasting power outages are very unlikely,” but are possible due to excessive power consumption in certain areas (e.g. through electric fan heaters or wall boxes). ON THE OTHER HAND: The problem of damaged high-voltage lines remains Short power outages can happen again and again anyway. However, it becomes even more problematic if important power or high-voltage lines are damaged or destroyed, for example by storms, and the electricity goes out across the board in the medium term. An adequately coordinated emergency power supply is therefore recommended to bridge the power outage due to storm damage or excessive energy demands on the network. Standard-compliant switching There are a few things to consider when setting up an emergency power system. With the Kraus & Naimer Manual Transfer Switch you can safely switch your regular power supply to a backup power supply (e.g. generator, photovoltaics). The standardized switching devices (IEC 60947-6-1 and IEC 60947-3) of the KA and KG series are available for distribution or front installation and as a surface-mounted version in the enclosure. The IEC 60947-6-1 standard defines all require ments regarding the design and testing procedures of Manual Transfer Switch Equipment (MTSE) to enable a save and reliable operation between two power supplies. The Manual Transfer Switch is available with a switching capacity of 25 to 160 A. In Germany, the 4-pole version is mainly used. Shaft extensions or enclosure variants usefully complement the program.
