SAE Schaltanlagenbau Erfurt GmbH
About us
SAE Schaltanlagenbau Erfurt, based in Thuringia and employing over 180 staff, has been a reliable manufacturer of switchgear for automation technology, mechanical engineering and plant construction for more than 60 years.
By combining switchgear and custom enclosure manufacturing, SAE Schaltanlagenbau Erfurt produces bespoke control cabinets for machine control systems and automation equipment, thereby supporting its customers’ commitment to innovation in a spirit of partnership and ensuring their individuality.
The control systems and enclosure manufacturing departments produce components to customer specifications or manufacture in-house designs in accordance with technically defined customer requirements.
Using the automated rotary powder coating system, every enclosure or individual component is finished to the colour specification requested by the customer. In addition, SAE Schaltanlagenbau Erfurt GmbH offers its customers powder coating as a standalone contract service. Special requests can also be met using the wet painting line, which is also available.
Products & services

PLC programming
We design, manufacture and test control systems for machinery, processes, energy and automation systems. The control cabinet assembly is carried out to a high standard of craftsmanship. Another major advantage: over 75% of all control cabinets are delivered with external cabling already fitted, enabling ‘plug-and-play’ commissioning of the machines and systems in the shortest possible time. Due to the high degree of specialisation and customisation of the systems, we work very closely with our customers; regular consultation is therefore essential.

Switchgear approved in accordance with UL 508A or NFPA 79

Wet painting for protective and decorative purposes
In wet painting, a liquid coating is applied thinly to objects, which is then converted into a solid film through chemical or physical processes. The functions of a wet-painted surface are similar to those of a powder-coated surface: Protective coating Decorative coating Functional coating (special surface properties) Depending on requirements and surface specifications, substrates are primed, filled, levelled and sanded. The guided conveyor system enables easy transport of parts to the various processing stations, as well as to the curing oven. With wet painting, we produce surfaces right up to a high-gloss finish. These are required by mechanical engineering firms that place very high decorative demands on their production facilities. Screen printing As part of our surface coating services, we also use screen printing to print on doors, housings and similar items. These include, amongst others: Labelling for front panels in the electronics industry Company logos or lettering on housings or doors Functional labelling for operating and control panels With the assistance of Handmann-Werbung GmbH in Erfurt, we design the negative screen according to your specifications, which we then use to apply your screen print to housings and similar substrates.
Environmentally friendly powder coating
In our semi-automated continuous coating system from Wurster Oberflächentechnik, we can degrease, phosphate and powder coat housings and sheet metal parts with dimensions of up to 3000 x 1200 x 800 (W x H x D). Parts exceeding these dimensions are coated in collaboration with partners where necessary. We also usually apply the primer as a powder coating. Powder coating offers a number of advantages over wet painting. Powder coating is more durable and cost-effective to apply. The solvent-free application is also environmentally friendly. Sealing foams for components
In foam sealing, liquid foam compounds are applied directly to the component. In this process, dimensionally stable and leak-proof seals are produced from multi-component liquid chemicals using a mixing and dosing system. With our two-component foaming system, we can apply seals to the most common surfaces. From stainless steel to painted sheet metal or plastics, we always find a solution. We can apply seals ranging from 5x3 to 25x12 onto components up to 650 mm high. Depending on the hardener content, these can achieve tensile strengths of 400–600 kPa and a temperature resistance of –40°C to +80°C (briefly up to 160°C). We also offer sealing foam application as a separate contract service. Many customers already make use of this service. Application examples: Sealing of electrical control cabinet panels and control cabinets Sealing of cover plates and flanges Sealing foam application enables the highest IP protection ratings to be achieved. The sealing foam is also tested to UL50 and achieves ratings from UL94-HBF up to UL94-HF1. Fermapor K31 sealing foam is used by leading manufacturers of control cabinets.
